Pittock Mansion Welcomes New Executive Director, Marta Bones
The Pittock Mansion Society Board of Directors has named Marta E. Bones the new executive director of Portland’s historic Pittock Mansion.
Bones, a Portland area resident has served as the Mansion’s interim director since February of this year. In her new role, she will lead efforts to expand the Mansion’s fundraising, cultural and educational programs and to increase public awareness of the historic house museum, built in 1914 by Portland pioneers Henry and Georgiana Pittock.
“In serving as interim director for many months, Marta has demonstrated the skills and leadership qualities needed in this important position,” said Pittock Mansion board president Randall Stevens. “The board is looking forward to continuing to work with Marta as we build new programs and exhibits and create opportunities for more community visibility.”
Bones’s background includes the American Federation of Arts in New York City as administrative and human resources coordinator, Hillier Architecture in New York, and the Phoenix Art Group in Phoenix, Ariz. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. She was hired as the Pittock Mansion’s Operations Manager in May of 2007.
Bones takes the reins at a challenging time for the Mansion. In July 2007, the Pittock Mansion Society took control of the historic home’s staffing and day-to-day operations from the City of Portland’s Parks and Recreation Department. Since then, staff and board members have been working to make the Mansion self-sufficient and to increase public attendance.
“I accept this position and the challenge of ensuring that Pittock Mansion remains a relevant, engaging museum with enthusiasm. I look forward to working with the staff and board to develop programs and community outreach activities which increase accessibility for all residents of the Portland metro area and offer the public reasons to come back to the Mansion,” said Bones.
A reception to welcome Marta Bones as the Pittock Mansion’s new executive director will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Mansion on November 13th.

Pittock Mansion Welcomes $390,000 from Estate of Eric Ladd
Timely “windfall” will help boost Mansion’s new fundraising, public awareness efforts
Portland’s historic Pittock Mansion, received a $390,000 bequest from the estate of noted Portland preservationist Eric Ladd. Presenting the check were Harvey Freer and Steve Maker, close friends of Ladd.
Eric Ladd, interested throughout his lifetime in preserving Portland’s historic homes and buildings, was a close friend of Peter Gantenbein, a Pittock family descendant and heir to the Mansion. Gantenbein was the last family member to live in the Mansion. Ladd encouraged the family to entrust the care of the Mansion to the City of Portland when they decided to sell it in 1964. The City bought the Mansion for $225,000.
Later this year, Pittock Mansion Society will take over the historic home’s staffing and day-to-day operations from the City of Portland’s Parks and Recreation Department.
“Eric Ladd’s generous bequest could not have come at a better time,” a Pittock representative said. “This windfall gives us a financial cushion that will help us as we expand our fundraising and community awareness programs during this crucial transition year.”
