Sunday, May 11th, 2008 11:00am-4:00pm
Pittock Mansion is the place to take Mom on Mother’s Day with free admission offered to all mothers on Sunday, May 11. Take part in the annual tradition of touring one of Portland’s most elegant locations both inside and out. Marvel at the magnificent marble staircase and 23 rooms of fine period furnishings. Learn the history of Henry and Georgiana Pittock and the home they built and occupied from 1914 – 1919.
Flowers are starting to bloom on the surrounding grounds, and the view of downtown Portland and the greater Metro area is one of the best in the city.
Take a tour through the homey Gate Lodge on the grounds and contemplate the lives of the Pittock Mansion chauffer, Herman Hawkinson, who occupied the Gate Lodge from 1914-1918, and then the gardener, James Skene and his family, who lived there from 1918 until 1953.
Top off your visit with a stop in the newly remodeled museum store may have just the thing for a mom: a porcelain vase, a fine scarf, vintage jewelry, or a one-of-a-kind handbag. A copy of the mansion book Simply Splendid will be given with any $40 purchase on Mother’s Day.
Regular admission to the mansion is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors 65+, $4 for youth 6 to 18 and free for Pittock Mansion members. The mansion’s current exhibit, Shadow and Light, features remarkable original paintings of the mansion and its gardens by local artists.
